How to Spend Your Tax Refund

How to Spend Your Tax Refund

Tax Day is finally complete and many Americans are breathing slightly easier today. While I won’t make you think about taxes for next year, I do want you to think about exactly what should be done with your tax refund you will be receiving for 2010. The average tax refund was about $3,000 this year, much higher than normal. As Market Watch wrote about recently, there are plenty of wise ways to spend that tax refund money. Never think of a tax refund as winning some kind of random lottery, because it is directly from your hard work.

Invest In Your Future

Investing in your future is a broad, but extremely important task for everyone. Use some of that tax refund to start up a retirement fund or begin investing in a personal investment portfolio. Take $1,000 and stick it in a portfolio and start small, you’ll be amazed at how far that might take you in the long run. Additionally, it is always a good idea to invest in your career and marketability. For example, take classes at a local college to learn more about your profession. At the time it might not seem like the most exciting choice, but it will be rewarding in the long run.

Improve Your Health

Get serious about improving your overall health by putting your money to work in something like a gym membership or a fee for a personal trainer. Make sure you are cost conscious when doing this, but realize that you are improving your future this way as well. Also, if you don’t have health insurance, make sure you use your refund to get that insurance. If you have a poor plan, consider upgrading. Your health is not something to mess around with, so take good care of yourself!
